What is an event (on RouteYou) and why should you make use of it?
An event is a happening always linked to a specific route (your route or a route of another author) where you would like to invite people. This can be very limited (e.g. your club members) or very extended (e.g. an international walking or cycling event). Typical examples of events on RouteYou are:
- you organize a walk or cycling tour and you want to invite your friends (and you would like to inform them about this via RouteYou, Facebook and/or e-mail)
- you would like to have some companionship during your next walk or cycling trip and you want to invite other people who also would prefer some companionship during an activity (read more about the Route Buddy concept).
- you organize regularly a cycling tour or a jogging event and you want to inform the club members + you would like to follow-up (via RouteYou) who will be there (or not)
- you organize a yearly great event (e.g. motor happening, an oldtimer-rally, a big cycling event) and you would like to inform and publish the users of RouteYou and your group members.
In that case, creating an event on RouteYou is the thing to do! And it is free!
How to create an event?
- Direct way:
- Selectet Create" (main menu) -> "Event"
- If you are not yet logged in, you will first be asked to do so. You need a (free) account (read here how to register).
- Selectet Create" (main menu) -> "Event"
- Via an activitity
- Select on any route-page the button "Do/Done" to mark your realized or planned activity (read here more about activities)
- There, you get an extra option to create an "event" if you mark "Find a route buddy and/or invite others via an event"
- If you mark this, you will get automatcially to the event creation page (some info is already filled in such as time)
Characteristics of an event
Mandatory:
- An event always has a starting date & time + an end date & time. That can be the same day, but also several days apart.
- An event is always linked to one route and as such to one route type (bv. MTB, race cycling, recreational cycling, jogging,...).
- The selection of the correct route type is important because users are looking most of the time for specific events (bv. MTB-ers are not necessarly interested in a hiking event). When you look a the the activity/event page of a MTB route, we ONLY promote events linked to other MTB-routes. When you select an event linked to a route of the more general type "bike", we promote as well events linked to race cycling as to recreational cycling. To understand the hierachy, have a look at this page.
- If your event is linked to several routes, you can do the following:
- create an events on each specific route with the same info
- create one event, but link that event to a GROUP, containing all the routes (read here how to create a group)
- An event has a title
- In the description of the event, you can add text, pictures, links to an external event page or website...
- You also have to indicate if your event is free (default) or not. This is informative. It is not used to promote your event more or less.
Type of events
- General (default): everybody is invited
- Club event: this indicates that the event is mainly targetting the club members (or a group of friends), not everybody. Although we do show it to everybody! So if you have party crashers, don't complain and be social.
- Find route buddy/buddies: read here more about the concept of route buddy
Optional:
Adding your event to a group
- You can link your event to one or more groups you own
- Read here how to add members to your group.
- Select the option "Share on Facebook" to share your event on Facebook
- This is only possible when you logged in on RouteYou via your Facebook account
- We publish the info you wrote (without the HTML) about your event on your FaceBook-page + a link to your event info on RouteYou so your followers can indicate itf they will come or not (see further)
How to find an event?
You can find an event (or your event can be found) in the following ways:
- Using the RouteFinder
- Select "More options"-> "Events"
- Select the type and the date from the dropdown
- You get to see the routes linked to events for this time period (and also the other selections you made in the RouteSearach (such as e.g. RouteType, Length, Score,...)
- Via the Activitity-page of a Route
- Check here an example of an activity page
- Events linked to a route of the same type (and subtypes), and located in the neighbourhood, and taking place the next months will be shown here in the list
- If you want to search for specific events, you can select the button "Find events nearby"
- Via the button "Nearby"-button on each route page (above the map & profile)
Participate in an event
On the Activity-page of a route, you can as well see the Events (if they exist linked to this route) as the Activities (Read here more about Activities).
You can indicate if you will join the event, selecting the button "I participate".
If you select that link, the participant gets the following options
- To share/not to share your participation on RouteYou
- If you select this, your Username will show up in the PUBLIC (!) list of participants on the Activity Page
- If you don't select this, your Username will NOT show up in the list
- The owner of the event gets an email, with the information that somebody (anonymous) will participate, but the owner wil lnot knwo who this mistery guest is
- To share/not to share your participation on Facebook
- Only possible when you logged in on RouteYou via Facebook, and if you also share on RouteYou
- In this case, your participation is also announced on your own Facebook account showing a link to the Event.
